Festival promotes health, wellness

BELMONT – Put on your running shoes and mark your calendars for May 16 – the second annual CaroMont Community Challenge.
The 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun walk event and festival will take place at Stuart W. Cramer High School.
Join doctors, nurses, neighbors, family and friends for a health and fitness event designed to inspire you to greater health.
Health improvement is underway in Gaston County backed by recent results from the County Health Rankings, which ranks Gaston County 77th out of 100 counties in health outcomes.
A slight improvement from last year, but there is still much to be done to create a more healthful community to live, work and play.
“Advancing the health of Gaston County takes everyone working together and our hope is that people will want to be a part of this health transformation and movement to raise awareness about health and wellness in our community,” said Doug Luckett, president and CEO of CaroMont Health.
The Community Challenge offers a 5K run starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 1-mile fun walk at 9 a.m. The family-friendly festival and entertainment will kick off at 7:30 a.m. and last until the end of the event.
Registration fees are $25 per person or $80 for a family rate (4 or more) for the 5K if you sign up by May 14 and a flat rate of $30 per person on event day. The one-mile fun walk is $3 per person or $5 for a family rate (up to seven members). Strollers are welcome, but please leave pets at home.
Race registration is available online at www.caromontcommunitychallenge.com or forms can be mailed to CaroMont Community Challenge, 1700 Camden Road, Suite 101, Charlotte, NC 28203.
Back by popular demand, the Let Me Run 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and is specifically designed for participants in the Let Me Run Boys program. Studies show that healthy behaviors are adopted at a young age. The boys’ program combines exercise with fun activities and lessons to help young males learn teamwork, relationship skills and to be empowered to live an active lifestyle.
From climbing the bleachers with a sack of flour strapped to your back to learning a new fitness routine, there are more than enough activities at the event to hold one’s attention. Activities include a hopscotch competition, circuit training, balancing exercise and medicine ball toss. Every activity attempted earns a ticket, which can be redeemed for a prize at the end of the festival. Stage entertainment will include fencing, karate, martial arts, clogging and police dogs.
