Fuel Pizza and Partners call for Field to Fork applications

Barringer fourth graders enjoyed the fruits of their labor – or rather, the vegetables – at Fuel Pizza Café in June. As a culmination to last year’s pilot Field to Fork program, they were able to head to the restaurant’s kitchen and make healthy, veggie pizzas on whole wheat crust with the vegetables they had grown themselves.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools elementary school teachers are invited to apply for the 2011 Fuel Pizza Cafe Field to Fork Program.
Sponsored by the Mecklenburg County Fruit and Vegetable Coalition, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Fuel Pizza Café and Charlotte Green, a nonprofit that helps start and sustain community gardens, the Food to Fork program is a six-month partnership focused on gardening, nutrition and healthy cooking education.
Last year, five elementary schools participated in the pilot program: Smith Academy, Rama Road, Old Providence, Barringer and Trinity Episcopal School. This year, seven schools will be selected to participate.
“One of the big things I’m looking for is how the teacher is going to take the idea and integrate it into the curriculum,” Program Nutritionist Allison Mignery said. “I want to see how they will use this as a platform to expand what is being done in the classroom,” she said.
Starting in January, students will begin nutrition education leading up to April, when they will begin their garden, planting oregano, basil, spinach, onion, tomatoes and peppers. As a culmination to the program, in June students will take their harvest to their partner Fuel Pizza Café and will be able to make their own vegetable pizzas in the kitchen using their produce.

Want to apply?
Visit the Mecklenburg County Health Department Website’s program page, http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/county/HealthDepartment/MCFVC/Pages/FieldtoFork.aspx, to apply. Applications are due Wednesday, Dec. 8, and the program begins in January. Schools do not need to have gardens in order to apply.
