MICS third graders look to the past

Mount Holly resident Margaret L. Rogers speaks with Charter school students about her childhood and 100-year life. Mrs. Rogers is the Grandmother of MICS third-grade teacher Ms. Pacitto.

Third-grade students at Mountain Island Charter School welcomed a special guest speaker last week. Mount Holly resident Margaret L. Rogers, who celebrates her 100th birthday Jan. 4, 2011, visited the class and discussed her childhood and her life over the last century.

Rogers’ visit was part of a class lesson in which the students discussed the past, and the ways their families have changed from past to present.

The students also created a “Before You Were Born Museum” at the school as a culmination of their lesson. The exhibit included donated items from the past, such as records, a record player, 8-track tapes, a butter churn, a lava lamp, photographs, books, toys, clothes and more.
