School Notes for Feb. 11

• Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools: Feb. 18 and 21 are snow day makeup days.

• Countryside Montessori: The school hosts an admissions open house Feb. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at three campuses: the preschool, at 4755 Prosperity Church Road; the elementary school, at 9026 Mallard Creek Road; and the middle/high school, at 4125 Johnston Oehler Road. All prospective families are invited to attend.  Parents can tour classrooms, meet with teachers and administrators and learn about Montessori education at all age levels. • East Gaston High: The student council is sponsoring a canned food drive through Monday, Feb. 14. The school’s goal is to collect more than 10,000 food items for Mt. Holly and Stanley food pantries.

• Francis Bradley Middle: The school is sponsoring a canned food drive through Friday, Feb. 11, to benefit local food pantries. Parents may send canned foods with their children or drop them off in the front office. … The week of Feb. 14 is Random Acts of Kindness Week.

• Hopewell High School: The school hosts an open house Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m. … The school hosts a Junior Night Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The College Foundation of North Carolina will speak to juniors about career and college readiness.

• Lincoln Charter School: The school is now accepting applications for the 2011-12 school year. The deadline for applications to be included in the 2011-12 lottery is Feb. 28. The lotteries will be held March 5 in the Denver middle school/high school gym. The kindergarten lottery will take place at 9 a.m. and the first- through twelfth-grade lottery will take place at 11 a.m.  Questions may be directed to registrarden@lincolncharter.org.

• Long Creek Elementary: The chess club meets Fridays at 7:30 a.m. in the media center. … The honors choir meets Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. in the music room.

• Mountain Island Day: The school hosts a Valentine’s Friendship Dance Friday, Feb. 11, from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m.

• Mountain Island Elementary: The school hosts the Mountain Island Chess Tournament Saturday, Feb. 12, beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. Registration forms are available in the school office. … The school holds a Valentine’s Day cookie sale the week of Feb. 14. … The school’s PTA invites community members to its 8th annual silent auction in the multipurpose room Feb. 25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.  Items included in the auction are Disney Park Hopper tickets, Great Wolf Lodge Stay, vacation rentals, Carrowinds tickets, Charlotte Knights gift pack, restaurant gift certificates, electronics and more. There will be a raffle for an iPad, entertainment and snacks. Childcare is available for $3 per child. Cash and checks are accepted.

• Pinewood Elementary: Students enjoy snacks with their classes Monday, Feb. 14, to celebrate Valentine’s Day. … Fifth-graders compete in the Math Masters competition Wednesday, Feb. 16.

• Ramah Christian Classical: The school hosts an open house Feb. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Feb. 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

• Whitewater Academy: The school hosts a Valentine’s dance for students in third through fifth grade Friday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m.  … Students participate in “Curl up and Read Day” Thursday, Feb. 17. …  The school hosts the “Leader in Me” boys group spaghetti dinner, sponsored by Olive Garden, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are due back to the classroom teachers with payment by Feb. 18 … The school celebrates Black History Month Feb. 25.
