A fishy day at Camp Thunderbird

Students with Pinewood Elementary School look on as a guide at Camp Thunderbird dissects a fish.

Fifth-graders at Pinewood Elementary School in Mount Holly recently spent a night at the YMCA’s Camp Thunderbird. Students got the chance to take part in pioneer life studies, fish seining and dissection, weather observation and team-building activities.

Students helped the counselor catch fish by seining. A net is unrolled and slowly walked across a fairly shallow portion of the lake. The net is weighted so that it stays on the bottom.  The students served as kickers and catchers. The kickers gently kicked the water encouraging fish to move towards the center of the net.  The catchers grabbed the fish and placed them in a bucket to be observed later.
