Poet pays visit to charter school

North Carolina Poet Laureate Cathy Smith Bowers visited Mountain Island Charter School third- through seventh-graders April 29, speaking about the use of metaphors in poetry.

“When I first started writing, I was you’re age – when I realized the power of words,” Bowers told students. “Words cannot only enrich our lives, but change our lives.”

Gov. Bev Perdue appointed Bowers, of Tryon, as the state’s Poet Laureate in January 2010.

“Poetry is when we shine a light on a moment of intensity, and you do that through imagery,” Bowers said.
