Whitewater Academy students receive thousands of books

CHARLOTTE – First Book-Charlotte and the Carolina Panthers donated books to Whitewater Academy on Nov. 30.

First Book-Charlotte granted 3,815 books – with a retail value of approximately $15,260 – to students of Whitewater Academy Elementary. Every book distributed at the event also related to the STEM garden that has been developed and sponsored by The Catawba River District.

Carolina Panthers players Jordan Gross, Luke Kuechly and Byron Bell also visited the school to distribute books.

Whitewater staff and students were excited about the donation, literacy facilitator Renee Golz said.

“First Book Charlotte is an incredible organization, and we are so grateful for the opportunity to have gained almost 4,000 books to put into the hands of our students,” Golz said. “The gift of an $11,200 grant combined with the appearance of the Carolina Panthers was an experience that our students will never forget.”

Principal Beth Thompson said the event was an incredible opportunity for Whitewater to celebrate the integration of initiatives in reading, health, fitness and gardening.

“We are so grateful to First Book-Charlotte, the Catawba River District and the Panthers for their support.”
