Nearly 2,500 student-athletes screened for heart health

CHARLOTTE – Nearly 2,500 high school student-athletes received free comprehensive athletic screenings at four locations this summer at Heart of a Champion Day, a Carolinas HealthCare System program.

All four locations posted record numbers of participating students.

More than 1,400 student-athletes were screened during the June 1 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools event, with 79 requiring follow-up medical attention before they could be cleared to participate in athletics.

Conditions discovered often require ongoing medical care and may have gone undetected without these free screenings. Conditions found included heart abnormalities, elevated blood pressure, diabetes, vision problems, lingering concussion issues and orthopedic concerns.
