CMS names Mountain Island school

CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved names for two Mountain Island-area schools at its April 22 meeting.
Mountain Island Elementary, now called Mountain Island Lake Academy, is expanding to include sixth, seventh and eighth grades beginning in the 2014-15 school year. The school board approved that expansion in December 2013.
Trillium Springs Montessori is the district’s newest Montessori school. It will open in August on the Long Creek Elementary School campus.
The names will be effective beginning in the 2014-15 school year.
Principals at each school formed a committee that includes parents and staff to choose three names to present to the school board.
The naming committee considered Springs Mill and Midas Springs as potential names for the Montessori program, but it didn’t want the school to be identified by a single community since magnet programs pull from a greater geographic area.
No, there isn’t a Trillium Springs near the school. Trillium is an indigenous state flower with three leaves. Montessori education is based on three things: the child, teacher and prepared environment. Plus the movement incorporates the environment.
The “Springs” in Trillium Springs acknowledges the proximity of the school to Midas Springs Road.
Mountain Island Elementary’s naming committee was much more straightforward. The other names considered for the school were Mountain Island K-8 and Mountain Island Academic Center.
Superintendent Heath Morrison recommended the board change the name to Mountain Island Lake Academy. The board followed suit.
