Board approves Coulwood name change

CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools voted to change the name of Coulwood Middle School to Coulwood STEM Academy during the Board of Education meeting April 14.
Principal Janet Moss requested the name change to better reflect the school’s science, technology, engineering and math curriculum.
Students, staff and parents voted on three names for the school, including Coulwood Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, as well as Coulwood Middle School.
The mascot will also morph from the Catamounts to the Wildcats.
“Students were unsure what a Catamount represented,” according to a school board memo. “Student groups were formed to develop ideas of a name and Wildcats won.”
