Roger Caldwell throws trash into a dumpster at the Riverbend boat ramp.

A boatload of trash, including a Charlotte Observer vending machine, ready to unload at the boat ramp.

About 200 volunteers showed up at two locations on Mountain Island Lake on Saturday, Oct. 2, to help take out the trash for the 2010 North Carolina Big Sweep Event. On the shores and in the water that trash amounted to almost 5 tons of tires, beverage cans and bottles, barbeque grills, building materials and one recliner.

On Lake Wylie, more than 900 volunteers collected 28 tons. The event drew more participants this year than the last three years combined.
