MOUNT HOLLY – Coffee lovers and ice cream worshipers can now indulge their cravings at one place in downtown Mount Holly.

It was that craving for ice cream that led the husband-and-wife duo Gerald and Marey Burgess to start Cream & Beans, which recently opened on Central Avenue.

Gerald Burgess really wanted a frozen treat one Monday evening, but by the time they got to Dairy Queen in Belmont, it was closed. The only other local option to fulfill Gerald’s sweet tooth was ice cream from a local grocery store. It was then the couple decided to open their own ice cream and coffee shop.

“We decided that Mount Holly needed some place that served hard ice cream,” said Marey Burgess, who had been laid off and was looking for employment.

The couple decided to also serve coffee at the shop since ice cream’s popularity declines as the temperature falls, Burgess added.

Cream & Beans opened in what used to be PC’s Barbecue in Mount Holly three months ago. Cream & Beans offers Tony’s Ice Cream in a variety of flavors, including grape, butter pecan, cherry cheesecake and peach. Milkshakes, banana splits, sundaes, fruit smoothies and desserts and pastries from Born to Cook and 36th Street Bakery are also on the menu.

Specialty coffee-and-ice-cream drinks have been popular with customers. The Burgesses said that people seem to like the Andes, an iced coffee blended with mint chocolate chip ice cream, white mocha and peppermint, and Totally Nuts, an iced coffee mixed with butter pecan ice cream, hazelnut, almond roca and honey.

“The Totally Nuts is not very sweet and the Andes tastes just like the Andes mints,” Marey Burgess said.

The Burgesses want to make Cream & Beans a family-friendly business. They offer “Happy Hour” from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and give students, teachers and teacher assistants a discounted price on any item. Also, the Burgesses are planning a Wii bowling league that will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

“We don’t want you to just come in and get ice cream,” Marey Burgess said. “We want you to come in, have a good time and sit down. There are several people who come in and I know their order already.”

Cream & Beans is at 140 E. Central Ave. Hours are 6:30 a.m. till 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. till 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 1 till 10 p.m. Sundays.
