New chairwoman elected for marine commission

Just an hour after taking her seat on the Mountain Island Lake Marine Commission on Wednesday, Oct. 6, Cathy Roche was elected to serve as the commission’s new chairwoman.

Mecklenburg county commissioners appointed Roche to the board Tuesday, Oct. 5, to replace former representative Tim Bishop, who had served his two-consecutive term limit.

Her fellow marine commissioners appointed her as the chairwoman, a position that has been held by Gaston County representative Pam Beck for the last two years.

Cathy Roch, an Overlook resident, retired in July from Duke energy where she served as the company’s chief communications officer. She has worked in corporate communications in Charlotte, Washington and New Orleans. Roch also was a journalist with the Associated Press and the Charlotte News for 10 years.

Skip Hudspeth, a Mecklenburg County representative was elected vice-chairman and Beck was elected secretary/treasurer.

Members sought for stakeholder group

The marine commission will accept applications for a stakeholder group through Oct. 30. The group will review and recommend solutions for enhancing the proposed Managed Access Regulations and is open to residents of Mecklenburg, Gaston and Lincoln counties.

The 17- to 19-member stakeholder group was slated to begin meeting in November but Roche said the commission won’t rush the process and might hold off the meetings until December.

“I hope we don’t push too fast to have a meeting in November,” she said. “ My priority will be to not let speed to get in the way.

The group is expected to deliver a final report by mid 2011. Members will be tasked with reviewing strategies to ensure the lake’s long-term viability.

Representatives sought include law enforcement agencies, environmental professionals, county commissioners, utilities, members of the public such as municipal water customers, lake users, concerned citizens and property owners. Volunteers should expect to attend monthly meetings lasting 2 to 3 hours.
