Mecklenburg County Health Department receives award

CHARLOTTE – The Mecklenburg County Health Department has been awarded the 2010 Glaxo Smith Kline Local Health Department Recognition Award for the department’s efforts to educate, prepare and immunize the community in response to H1N1.

In 2009, as H1N1 became the central focus for local, state and national public health agencies, Mecklenburg County Health Department took on the challenge with a comprehensive and collaborative approach.

Schools, daycare centers and hospitals were part of a network, bringing together data that allowed staff to find clusters of illness, which led to appropriate prevention measures.

Staff, volunteers, and community partners also created a multimedia campaign in to reduce risk, fear and misinformation.  More than 42,000 children and adults received more than 65,000 H1N1 immunizations in schools. The health department immunized another 15,000 people at health department and community-based clinics.
