Lake Norman hosts fishing tournament Dec. 11

CORNELIUS – Visit Lake Norman will host the 5th Annual Ryan Newman Foundation Charity Fishing Tournament at Blythe Landing on Dec. 11.

The tournament features NASCAR stars and professional anglers as well as open registration for amateur anglers. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ryan Newman Charity Foundation.

The tournament has launched from Iredell County for the last four years, and 675 attendees are expected at this year’s event, with an estimated $180,900 in visitor spending to be generated for the local economy.

Tournament anglers will launch from Blythe at sunrise, with the celebrity portion of the tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Weigh-ins for anglers and celebrities both begin at 3 p.m. on the BASS tournament stage. Celebrities fishing to date include Ryan Newman, Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer and singer Bridgette Tatum.

The public is welcome to attend the launches and weigh-ins, and to purchase raffle tickets during the morning for rod/reel combos, autographed NASCAR memorabilia, Bass Pro Shops apparel, race shop tours, lures and more.

Anglers will compete for a chance to win a 2010 Nitro Z9 boat with a Mercury motor and trailer.  Other prizes will include cash, trolling motors, GPS systems, depth finders, rods and reels, outdoor equipment and Sprint mobile phones.

Angler registrations will be accepted through Dec. 11, and a valid North Carolina fishing license is required.  Registration forms and information are available at, at the team check-in table at the Concord Mills Bass Pro Shop on Dec. 9 and 10, and at Blythe Landing the morning of Dec. 11.
