Mount Holly hires new park director

Ed Smith has been hired as the new director of Mount Holly Parks and Recreation.

He was the recreation supervisor of Gwinnett County in Georgia and spent 13 years working in parks and recreation in Florida before joining Mt. Holly’s department. He received bachelor degrees in health, fitness and recreation and communications and public relations from Mississippi State University.

Smith accepted the position in Mount Holly to be closer to his family in Charlotte.

“When the opportunity in Mount Holly came up, I was very interested,” he said. “There is just a lot of potential and opportunity with the parks and creation department here.”

Although Smith has only been on the job since Nov. 1, he has several goals for the department; He would like to expand and improve the park facilities, add more classes and programs and increase revenue.

Ultimately, Smith would like to see the city work towards its goals in a master plan created for parks and recreation.

“Of course, the plan is long-term and it’s not going to happen at one time,” he said. “It will be piece-by-piece and obviously, with the economy the way it is, we are doing things as much as is allowed.”

Smith would like to hear from residents about the needs and wants of the community.

“I am definitely open to any ideas and suggestions the residents have,” he said. “I want to work with other groups in the community and find out what needs aren’t being met.”

Smith can be contacted at 704-951-3005 or ed.smith@mtholly.us.
