New home provides hope to homeless and pregnant teens

GASTONIA – A newly constructed maternity home will open in January, becoming the first transitional living facility in the state focused on homeless and at-risk teenage mothers.

The new With Friends Maternity Home, 2098 Keith Drive, will house six young mothers and up to nine babies and young children two-years and under for up to 24 months. Staff at the facility will provide counseling and support to teen moms who will not reside at the center.

Every teen mom who is assisted by With Friends will be required to learn parenting skills, family planning, and other lessons designed to teach self-sufficiency and avoid dependency on the welfare system.

In addition, the young mothers must complete their education and attend job-training classes.

The 4,910 square-foot center is being opened by With Friends, a private, non-profit organization providing shelter and counseling to youth in crisis.
