Man arrested in fatal hit and run

Johnson

A 46-year-old driver turned himself in to police two days after authorities say he hit and killed a man trying to cross Brookshire Boulevard.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested James Edward Johnson on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and charged him with felony hit and run causing injury or death in connection with the Sunday, Nov. 28, accident that killed 68-year-old George Calebro.

“The suspect admitted to driving the vehicle that struck the victim, and he further admitted to leaving the scene,” Detective Jesse Wood said in a news release.

Police said Calebro was attempting to cross in the 4200 block of Brookshire Boulevard on Sunday about 5 a.m. when he was struck. The driver of the vehicle, which police described at the time as a dark blue Ford pickup or sport utility vehicle, did not stop. MEDIC pronounced Calebro dead at the scene.

On Monday, police released pictures from a traffic camera at Brookshire Boulevard and Hoskins Road that showed a blue Ford F-150 turning onto Hoskins Road. The image was captured at 5:18 a.m. Sunday.

Johnson is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail under a $50,000 secured bond. Police have impounded his 2004 Ford F-150 pickup.

Authorities are still investigating the accident and ask that anyone with information call a detective at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
