Local cyclist plans riding group

HUNTERSVILLE – The Strong and Focused Triathlon Club will have an informational meeting Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Upgrade Lifestyle, 11330 Vanstory Drive.

Billy Doherty, a cyclist who was badly injured after being hit by a car in August while riding in Davidson, started the group to train with others.

The club invites cyclists at all experience levels, whether they are training for their first race or an Ironman competition. Team racing, coaching programs and group rides, runs and swims will also be a part of the club meetings.

Doherty was hospitalized after crashing with a truck while cycling on Aug. 19.

“I met some amazing people while recovering and we talked about creating a club so people would not have to train alone,” Doherty wrote in an e-mail. “The club is here to support all levels of triathletes. There are other great clubs in Cornelius. This one is geared to folks in Huntersville.”
