Area restaurants join farmers for ‘Souper Bowl’

by Christina Ritchie Rogers

The seventh annual Souper Bowl, a soup-tasting fundraiser sponsored by Davidson Housing Coalition, brings a new, local twist to its recipes this year.

The coalition is partnering with the Davidson Farmer’s Market to introduce more local ingredients into the soups. It will also add a new category to the competition: “Best farm to spoon.”

“We wanted to have a fundraising event that could be a little different for the community,” Davidson Housing Coalition Executive Director Marcia Webster said. “One that was not your typical ‘rubber chicken’ dinner.”

The soup tasting, which will include soups from area restaurants, begins Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. and lasts until 2 p.m. Tasters will vote on soups in different categories.

Participating restaurants include Armin’s Catering, Campania Café and Trattoria, Flatiron Kitchen and Taphouse, The Egg, Restaurant X, Toast Café and Sabi Asian Bistro.

Joining the sponsors in supporting the event are local artists and artisans. The bowl will include a silent auction of artwork donated by local artists, dessert provided by Bird & Bear Cookie Co. and live music from Sands of Time, Rusty Knox and Davidson College student a capella groups.

All proceeds from the event benefit the HAMMERS program (Hands Around Mecklenburg/Mooresville Making Emergency Repairs Safely). Created in 2005, HAMMERS is a collaborative effort between Davidson Housing Coalition and Davidson College offering repair services to low-income homeowners.

The Souper Bowl and silent auction have brought in around $7,000 to $8,000 annually for the program, Webster said, and most years they sold out, with more than 400 people attending. To learn more, visit
