Mayor kicks off inaugural Career Discovery Days

CHARLOTTE – The city’s Mayor’s Youth Employment Program has joined forces with Discovery Place to present a monthly youth workshop series called “MYEP Career Discovery.”

The workshop series will give teenagers the opportunity to explore the various industries and sectors that Charlotte has identified as growth sectors, including health care, energy and the environment, finance, manufacturing, defense, tourism and motor sports. Youth will have the chance to meet industry representatives and gain a greater understanding of the qualifications necessary for different careers.

There will be five Career Discovery days in 2011. Approximately 150 youth, ages 16 to 18, will participate in each workshop. Mayor Anthony Foxx will be present to welcome students to each career day and discuss the importance of early career exploration. All workshops will be held at Discovery Place from 4 to 6 p.m.

Workshops include:

• Nanoscience/Material Science Professions, March 22

• Energy Professions, April 26

• Motor Sports Professions, May 24

• Finance Professions, June 14
