River district hosting spring programs

The Catawba River District is offering several programs to welcome spring to the Mountain Island area. They include:
• Belmont Arbor Day, Saturday, March 19.
Celebrate the beauty and importance of trees at Belmont’s Arbor Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Browse educational displays, get advice for taking care of trees and enjoy live bluegrass at Stowe Park, 24 S. Main St., in downtown Belmont. The event is free.
• Latta Nature Center Spring Fling, Sunday, March 20.
Nature, history, family and fun come together at the nature preserve’s spring festival. Welcome in the first day of spring with storytelling, crafts, seed planting, insect investigation and other activities. Spring Fling takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. at the center, 6211 Sample Road, Huntersville.


• Catawba River Women’s Group luncheon, March 24.

Learn how the U.S. National Whitewater Center has become a major sports and recreation draw for the area and its impact on the Catawba. Whitecenter center Director Jeff Wise will speak at the luncheon, which starts at 11:45 a.m. the center, 5000 Whitewater Center Pkwy., off Belmeade Drive in Charlotte. The luncheon costs $20 for paid registrations received by Thursday, March 18, and $30 for later registrations. The whitewater center also charges $5 per car to park.
