City seeking grant money

MOUNT HOLLY – Mount Holly is moving forward to be designated as a Playful City USA.

KaBOOM, a nonprofit organization, hands out the national designation to cities and towns that value the importance of play. Last year, 118 cities in 36 states were recognized for implementing local action plans committed to reversing the play deficit facing the country. The Playful City USA program is offering $2.1 million in Let’s Play grants over the next three years.

“This would help us determine our strengths and rectify any weaknesses in our park system,” said Ed Smith, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. “I think it’s important to note that with the state and federal government having less and less money out here, this would be another option we could go to for playground funding.”

The Mount Holly City Council voted Monday, March 28, to put Smith’s request on the April 11 consent agenda, where it’s expected to be approved.
