Guilty verdict in Yarmolenko trial

Mark Carver was sentenced to life in prison last month after a Gaston County jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in the 2008 strangling death of Irina “Ira” Yarmolenko, a college student found on a Catawba River bank in Mount Holly.

Carver, 42, was accused of killing the 20-year-old University of North Carolina at Charlotte sophomore with his cousin Neal Cassada who died of a heart attack in October, a day before his trial was set to begin.

Yarmolenko was killed May 5, 2008.
