Making cake a family affair

Hollie Buck; her mother-in-law, Gina Buck; and sister-in-law, Jennifer Buck Yarbrough, have gone from making sweet treats for friends and family to opening their own business, Sugar Diva’s Custom Cakes.

All three took Wilton Cake Decorating classes, and Gina Buck taught classes at Hobby Lobby. Pretty soon, they were making cakes of all shapes, sizes and colors for friends and family members, particularly for Hollie Buck’s and Yarbrough’s daughters.

“We’d all done it out of our homes for a while, but everybody was like, ‘You all need to get into business together.’ So we decided to do something,” Gina Buck said.

Sugar Diva’s opened March 1 inside Cream & Beans at 140 E. Central Ave., in downtown Mount Holly, offering a variety of cupcakes, from Oreo to key lime, and fudge in chocolate and peanut butter flavors.

Custom cakes for any occasion are a specialty among the three business owners. Hollie Buck prefers making the classic and intricate wedding cakes. Gina Buck enjoys making cakes with butter-cream frosting, and Yarbrough tends to take on the “special project cakes.”

Hollie Buck’s own wedding cake provides her inspiration. Though she gave the baker a picture to go by, her cake “was ugly,” leaning slightly, covered with big, fake flowers and lacking any attention to detail.

“It was just devastating,” she said. “I wanted to make beautiful cakes to make sure they were as beautiful as people wanted them to be.”

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and by appointment for wedding consultations.  Find more information at the website, www.sugardivascustomcakes.com, or call 704-780-9897 or 704-780-9864.
