Rare mouse found at Cowan’s Ford Wildlife reserve

Biology student Rob Gilson’s got a chance to see something at Cowan’s Ford Wildlife Refuge that hadn’t been spotted in this area in more than 40 years: a mouse.

An oldfield mouse to be more accurate, the Mountain Island Monitor’s news partner WBTV reported. Gilson spotted one last month at the Huntersville refuge. The species of mouse isn’t normally seen this far north. The tiny creatures prefer to stay further south in the United States. The last time one was spotted in the county was 1968.

Musophobes don’t fret. These mice prefer to burrow in the ground for shelter and don’t seek solace in your house.
