Mount Holly names Man and Woman of the Year

MOUNT HOLLY – John Hope and Wrene Benfield are Mount Holly’s Man and Woman of the Year. The lifelong Mount Holly residents were honored at the 61st annual Mount Holly Community Dinner on April 30 at the city’s Grand Hall.

Hope is the president of First Methodist Church and founder of the Black History Forum. He worked for the city for 18 years, before retiring as the city inspector.

Benfield, 84, a former nurse at Presbyterian Hospital, serves as chairwoman of the First Methodist Church council.

Benfield is a mentor to the church’s young adults and allows the church to use her vegetable garden to raise and sell vegetables to help fund the Mount Holly Community Relief Organization.
