GASTONIA – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Whitewater Middle School teacher was suspended from his job last month after being arrested on assault charges in Gaston County, according to Mountain Island Monitor news partner WBTV.

He was arrested by police in Gastonia on Sept. 29 on charges of first degree burglary and inflicting serious injury. According to the school district, Butler is a sixth-grade language arts teacher who was hired by the school in January 2011.

He also was arrested in June in Georgia for possession of marijuana, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials.

He has been suspended with pay from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, pending the outcome of a personnel investigation of both incidents. Following Butler’s arrest, the district alerted parents about the situation via letter.

Butler posted a $10,000 bond and made a court appearance Oct. 18.
