Pay property taxes on time to avoid interest charges

CHARLOTTE – Mecklenburg County reminds residents that property tax payments must be made on or before Jan. 5 to avoid interest charges. If mailed, the payments must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before that date.

Property owners whose payments are received or postmarked after the deadline will be charged two percent interest for the month of January and an additional three-quarters of one percent every month thereafter until paid. The countys tax collector’s office has mailed reminder postcards to all taxpayers with unpaid 2011 real estate, individual personal property and business personal property taxes.

Property owners who have appealed their tax values are encouraged to pay before the Jan. 5 deadline, even if the appeal is pending. If the assessed property value is reduced as the result of an appeal, the owner will receive a refund at par prior to the delinquency date. After the delinquency date, the interest on the taxes for the valuation change is paid with the refund.
