Roy Hayes Cox

CHARLOTTE – Roy Hayes Cox, 84, of Charlotte, died Jan. 5, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

Born July 11, 1927 in Mecklenburg County to the late Freddie Hayes Cox and Sarah Park Cox, Cox was a U.S. Army Veteran and lifelong member of Cooks Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder and Sunday school superintendent. He also was the co-owner of Bellhaven Auto Sales.

In addition to his parents, Cox was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Cooper, and grandson Matthew Alan Cox.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Gladys Williams Cox; three sons, Roy Hayes Cox, Jr. and wife, Geni, Steven L. Cox and wife, Sheila, and Freddie Boyd Cox and wife, Maria; six grandsons, one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. TJ Thompson was held Jan. 9 and burial followed in the church cemetery at Cooks Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home was in charge.

Eugene Edward Biddix

MOUNT HOLLY – Eugene “Gene” Edward Biddix, 64, of Mount Holly, died Jan. 8, 2012.

Born in Gaston County, Biddix was a son of the late Gorge Edward and Ollie Mae Jone Biddix. The U.S. Army veteran was retired from his job as a chemical operator at SODEYCO and worked at WalMart at the time of his death.

Surviors include his wife, Margaret Ann Rankin Biddix, daughter Lisa Hester of Charlotte and grandsons Corey Hester and Justin Morgan.

A funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Herman Winkler, was held Jan. 11 at the Woodlawn Funeral Home. Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly was in charge.

Kathleen Tippett Gordon

TAYLORS, S.C. – Kathleen Tippett Gordon, 65, of Taylors, S.C., died Jan. 5, 2012 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio and formerly of Charlotte, Ms. Gordon was the daughter of the late William Brooks and Virginia Dumbald Tippet. She was a member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church and an administrative assistant with BB&T in Charlotte.

Survivors include two brothers, Michael B. Tippett and wife, Judith, of Bradenton Fla. and Mark L. Tippett and wife, Barbara of Greer; four nieces; and three nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or the American Heart Association.

The Wood Mortuary, Inc. served the family.

John DeVito Jr.

MOUNT HOLLY – John DeVito Jr., 84, of Woodlawn Haven Rest Home, died Jan. 20, 2012.

Born in Patchogue, N.Y., Mr. DeVito was the son of the late John DeVito Sr. and Theresa DeVito.

Retired from the Westinghouse Corporation, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former Mount Holly Man of the Year, a member of the National Model Railroad Association and active in Habitat for Humanity. DeVito and his late wife, Minnie, helped organize the Mount Holly pie-tasting contest.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Minnie Helms Pope DeVito.

Survivors include stepdaughter Mary Pope Costner of Dallas; a step-grandson Andy Costner and wife, Lisa, of Dallas; a step-great-grandaughter, Rachel Costner; and one sister.

A celebration of life service, officiated by the Rev. Jason Bryant, was held Jan. 23 at The Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly. Burial followed in Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery.

Woodlawn Funeral Home was in charge.

James Ronald Schronce

MATTHEWS – James Ronald Schronce, 74, of Matthews, died Jan. 6, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Born in Mount Holly to the late Osborne and Elizabeth Frady Schronce on Jan. 28, 1937, Mr. Schronce was a veteran of the U.S. Army and American Legion and worked as a master brick mason for all of his working life.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Nell Porter Schronce; son Gregory Scott Schronce of Charlotte, daughters Scarlette Schronce Weaver and husband, Benjamin, of Charlotte and Debra Schronce Kitler and husband, Rick, of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister Linda Schronce Maudlin; and grandchildren Gabriel Porter Weaver and Lucas James Weaver.

A funeral service officiated by the Rev. Tim Moore, was held Jan. 9 at the McEwan Funeral Service funeral home chapel. Burial followed at the Sharon Memorial Mausoleum.

McEwan Funeral Service was in charge.
