Kathryn B. Johnson

CHARLOTTE – Kathryn Bailey Johnson, 94, died Feb. 6, 2012 at the Charlotte Health Care Center.

The daughter of the late Robert and Martha Bailey, Ms. Johnson was born in Asheville. She graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville and then graduated from Molder Beauty Academy in Atlanta. Following graduation she worked in Anniston, Ala.

She was a member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Byers Johnson, sister Pauline Marqwardt and two brothers James Heilig and Herman Heilig.

Survivors include her son, Michael, as well as nieces and nephews.

A graveside service, officiated by the Rev. Gary Bryant, was held Feb. 9 at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Paw Creek Presbyterian Church, 7400 Mt. Holly Road, Charlotte N.C. 28214.

Ray Bryant

MOUNT HOLLY – Ray Bryant, 72, of Mount Holly died Feb. 25, 2012 at his home.

Born Dec. 9, 1939 in Wewahitchka, Fla., Mr. Bryant was a son of the late John and Essie Foley Bryant.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran.

Survivors include his wife Sharon Ballard Bryant; son Randy Bryant; and family members Kevin, Julia, Blake, Brooke, Tyler, Marinda and Harrison Wilkinson.

A memorial service was held Feb. 27 at East Belmont Church Of God with the Rev. Tom Tatum and Chaplain Ivan Davis officiating.

Donations may be made to East Belmont Church of God Children’s Minisitry, 320 Catawba St. Belmont, N.C. 28012.

Telitha J. Helms

MOUNT HOLLY – Telitha James Helms, 89, died Feb. 16, 2012.

Ms. Helms was born in Mount Holly on July 3, 1922 to the late James Franklin James and Louisa Hartgrove James.

She was a member of Tuckaseegee Baptist Church of 86 years, where she served for many years as the teacher of the King’s Daughters Sunday school class.

Survivors include her daughter Gloria H. Horton and husband, Eli, and Rachel H. Cassada and husband, Galen, of Mount Holly; son Thomas Ray Helms Jr. and wife, Kitty, of Sherrills Ford; niece Sue James Guice; and grandchildren Heather H. Wilson and husband, Brad, of Mount Holly; Rachel H. Silver and husband, Tim, of Lincolnton; Robin C. Smith and husband, Brent, of Belmont; Chuck Cassada and wife, Barbara, of Boone, Thomas Ray Helms III and wife, Kelly, of Mount Holly, and Brad Helms and wife, Christina, of Belmont; and great-grandchildren Noah Helms, Nate and Drew Cassada, Carolina and Conner Smith, Gregory and Eli Wilson and Chase and Morgan Silver.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 49 years Thomas Ray Helms, Sr. and sister Warren James.

A memorial was held Feb. 18 at Tuckaseege Baptist Church in Mount Holly. Memorials may be made to Tuckaseege Baptist Church’s Lottie Moon Mission Offering, 511 Tuckaseege Road, Mount Holly, N.C. 28120.

Carl E. Moore

CHARLOTTE – Carl Eugene Moore, 90, of Charlotte died Feb. 9, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital.

Born in Rockland, Penn., Mr. Moore was the son of the late Carl Emerson Moore and Rosa Gates Moore.

He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force during World War II and Korean War. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and retired from Westinghouse after 15 years of service. He also was a member of the Masons.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ina Sellers Moore.

He is survived by son Robert Gene Moore and wife, Nancy, of Pageland, S.C.; daughter Rose Moore Borja and husband, Michael, of Lincolnton; sister Dee Newhouse of Colorado; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service, officiated by the Rev. L.J. Mills, was held Feb. 14 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Military honors were presented by the U.S. Military Honor Guard.

Paula M. Leonard

CHARLOTTE – Paula Melvin Leonard, 79, of Charlotte, died Feb. 17, 2012.

Born Sept. 26, 1937 in Mount Holly, Ms. Leonard was a daughter of the late Nellie and Booth Melvin.

She graduated from Harding High School in 1956 and King’s Business College. She was retired from the N.C. Clerk of Courts office.

Survivors include her five children, Robert David Leonard and wife, Cyndi, Paul Edward Leonard and wife, Stacie, John Steven Leonard and fiancée, Marti, Amy Leonard Hollingsworth and Emily Leonard Ratterree; grandchildren Thomas Andrew Hollingsworth, Shelby Rawlins and Noah Rawlins; sister Faye Edwards, Martha Morrison, Jean Swann and Becky Jenkins; and brother Larry Melvin.

A funeral service was held Feb. 20 at Assurance United Methodist Church. Memorial may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Harry and Bryant Funeral Home was in charge.
