Words spreads on social media about missing Catawba teens

Students at Bandys High School are taking to social media to ramp up search efforts for two missing Catawba County teens.

As volunteers and search crews combed the area along I-77 in Fairfield County, S.C., friends and community members back home used their Facebook and Twitter accounts to spread the word about Jake Ziegler, 18, and Ray Pierce, 17. Catawba County Sheriff’s officials believe the pair might have crashed between exits 41 and 49 of the interstate on the way to Myrtle Beach after attending a party.

Jones Fish Camp in Denver wrote the following post on their Facebook page:

“Please continue to keep Ray and Jake in your prayers. Pray that the searchers are led to the right spot and these boys are found TODAY! We want to bring our hometown boys back and their family and friends!! You’re in our thoughts and prayers Jake Ziegler and Ray Pierce!”

The volunteer rescue team has also set up a Facebook page, titled Help find Jake Ziegler & Ray Pierce, to help organize the search effort. Instructions for people interested in helping with the search, as well as requests for tents, snacks, water and other needs – are listed on the site.

Classmates have also sent out thousands tweets to spread awareness about the disappearance using the hashtag #FindJakeandRay.

More than 100 volunteers continued the search Thursday morning to find the two Bandys High School students.

Investigators say the boys were last seen driving a 2006 green Pontiac G-6 with an NC license plate no. BDD-8844.

Ziegler is 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds and was last seen wearing gray cargo shorts and a royal blue t-shirt with white reverse writing. He has a pierced left ear.

Investigators say Pierce is about the same size as Ziegler, only stockier and was last seen wearing Timberland boots, a red and gray RVCA jacket and jeans.

The sheriff’s department has asked anyone with tips to call 828-465-8301.
