District responds to school shooting

CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released a statement in response to the Newtown, Conn., shooting that left 26 people dead at an elementary school, including 20 children.

The statement read as follows:

“We are very saddened by the news in Connecticut and our thoughts and prayers are with the families in that community. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools police officers work closely with CMPD and agencies in surrounding towns to keep our schools safe. We routinely review safety procedures, crisis plans and evacuation maps to ensure that teachers, staff and students know how to respond when a situation occurs on campus. Safety policies are regularly discussed with principals and district leaders. We will continue to be proactive in our security procedures to provide a safe and positive learning environment for all students.”
