NCDOT awards contract to resurface U.S. 321

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to Blythe Construction Inc., of Charlotte, to resurface 8 miles of U.S. 321 from north of Roechling Street to the Lincoln County line.

“This is a heavily traveled section of highway, especially for trucks traveling between I-85 and I-40, and it needs to be resurfaced,” said Division 12 Construction Engineer Reuben Chandler. “We’re also going to add two inches of pavement to fortify the road to  handle the increasing amount of traffic along this route.”

The $7.7 million contract was $1.56 million, or 16.6 percent, below the department’s estimated cost. Blythe will begin work next spring and complete the project by July 1, 2014.

The paving season is typically March through November when temperatures are warmer.
