Hawks sprint to a victory

West Mecklenburg High sprinters (from left) Alvonna Blakney, Noel Tapper, Michaela Williams and Naya Tapper combined to win the 400-meter relay at the Queen City Relays on March 24. The foursome won in 47.71 seconds, which was the best time in North Carolina this season, and the 26th-best nationally, according to milesplit.us. It was 1/100th of a second from the meet record, which was set in 1982.

The four runners also combined to win the 800-meter relay. Their time of 1:41.25 was more than two seconds better than second-place Monroe High.

Blakney, Williams and Naya Tapper are seniors. Noel Tapper is a junior. Individually, Blakney was second in the 300-meter hurdles (44.10 seconds) and Naya Tapper was third in the 100-meter dash (12.55 seconds).
