Hawks baseball, softball ousted early

CHARLOTTE – West Mecklenburg High baseball coach Mike Carpino admitted his team’s 2013 roster was a young and inexperienced one.

Based on Carpino’s early assessment, the Hawks’ mere presence in the Class 4A state playoffs could constitute the season as a success.

West Mecklenburg notched a 7-7 mark in MEGA-7 3A/4A conference play and advanced to the postseason, but didn’t move past the first round.

The Hawks fell 6-0 to Indian Trail Porter Ridge High on May 10 in the opening round.

The Hawks’ softball team overcame an 0-3 start to the season to also qualify for the playoffs.

West Mecklenburg lost 12-2 on May 10 to Monroe Sun Valley High in the first round.
