10U All-Stars finish 2-2 in tourney

MOUNT HOLLY – The Mount Holly 10U All-Stars played in the Dixie Youth State Championship last month in Eden.
With only two weeks to raise the money, many local businesses stepped up to sponsor the team.
Players, coaches and parents worked together to raise money for the trip to Eden.
On the Fourth of July, standing at the intersections in front of Food Lion in Mount Holly, people gave very generously.
The following day, we stood in front of Walmart and again, donations were excellent.
On one occasion, an older gentleman came up and talked to our boys. He was on the first all-star team in Mount Holly in the 1950s. He gave them a $100 bill.
The Gastonia Grizzly’s also allowed us to sell 50/50 tickets to the fans to help with our fundraiser. In the end it was enough money for our entire trip.
Opening Ceremonies began July 18 with 16 teams represented. Our first game was July 19 with a win against North Stanley 5-2 and our second win against Fairmont was decided in extra innings, 6-5.
We lost to eventual champion Hope Mills National team and finished with two wins, two loses. Also, our team was awarded the Ken Britt sportsmanship award for the tournament.
Our team is proof that hard work and great coaching pays off. This was a great experience for all the players, coaches and families. Even though we didn’t win the championship, we walked away victorious and made memories to last a lifetime!
