Hawks enjoying stadium renovations

CHARLOTTE – The West Mecklenburg football stadium was one of three stadiums under Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools jurisdiction that got dramatic upgrades to their facilities.
With more than half of a season already in the books, West Meck athletics director Vernon Hunter said he couldn’t be happier with the changes made and what that means for the visibility of the school and the athletic program as a whole.
“It’s pretty much a brand new stadium,” Hunter said. “It has the field turf, new concession stands, additional parking spaces – it’s the works. It’s a very, very good renovation.
“It gives a lot of confidence in their athletics and it gives them a lot of pride in their home-field advantage.”
This spring, the stadium is home to the girls varsity and JV soccer teams, but Hunter said the new additions give more than just a new field to play on.
“We are growing our athletic program and are trying to be equally competitive all across the board,” he said. “And the new stadium helps that. Not only is it a great overall look, but it gives us the opportunity to host football camps, football and soccer leagues and things of that nature. Overall, it gives us more exposure to the athletic department and is a great thing for our school and sports programs.”
