Star RB transferring to East Gaston

MOUNT HOLLY – Former SouthLake Christian star running back Robert Washington Jr. announced he will transfer from SouthLake Christian Academy in Huntersville and will enroll later this school year at East Gaston.
Washington is a four-star recruit and is rated the No. 15 running back in the nation by Yahoo.com. He has narrowed his list of more than 40 scholarship offers to six schools – Michigan, North Carolina, Texas Christian, Alabama, Syracuse and Florida – and is expected to make his college decision final April 25.
At SouthLake Christian, Washington led the Eagles to consecutive state championships in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association’s Division III bracket.
Washington’s 5,762 career rushing yards make him the fourth all-time leading rusher in Mecklenburg County history. Washington has amassed more than 2,500 rushing yards as a sophomore and tallied over 2,200 as a junior.
East Gaston went 5-7 last year, including losing a 48-14 game to Forestview in the first round of the playoffs.
The Warriors have gone 14-29 in coach Sean Joyce’s four years at the helm, and have compiled a 26-64 record since the school’s last winning season in 2006.
