Nature center explores the world beyond the backyard

HUNTERSVILLE – The nature center, located at 6211 Sample Road, is an arm of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department. For more information or to register for the center’s camps, call 704-875-1391.

The center will offer the following:

• L.A.N.D. (Learning About Nature through Discovery) Camp: Amazing Animals, June 15-19 and July 13-17.
The camp is open to children 4 to 6 years old and meets from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $75. Campers will investigate what makes animals amazingly different from one another. Children will get up-close encounters with animals and go out into the nature preserve to learn where these animals live.

• L.A.N.D. (Learning About Nature through Discovery) Camp: Web of Life, July 27-31 and Aug. 10-14.
The camp is open to children 4 to 6 years old and meets from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $75. During this weeklong, half-day camp, children will learn how everything is connected in the natural world. Investigate why bees help you buy new clothes or why the smallest mushroom helps the tallest tree grow.

• Outdoor Adventure Camp, June 22-26 and Aug. 3-7
The camp is open to children 7 to 10 years old and meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $150. Campers will explore Latta Plantation Nature Preserve through canoeing, fishing, orienteering, wilderness survival, wild edibles and field games.
