Riding camps for all skill levels

HUNTERSVILLE – Latta Plantation Equestrian Center Day Camp will offer several day camps beginning June 13 and running through the week of Aug. 19, except for July 4 week.

The center will offer beginner and intermediate camps, and campers must be at least 7 years old by the start of camp week. The dates of the camps are:

• Beginner rider camps: June 13-17, June 27-July 1, July 11-15, Aug. 1-5 and Aug. 8-12.

• Intermediate rider camps: June 20-24, July 25-29 and Aug. 15-19.

The intermediate camp will be available to campers that have attended the beginner camp or have had eight hours of riding lessons. “At this level, our campers will proceed to lope, including trotting on diagonals, balance of horse and rider, school figures, correct leads and maneuvering-around patterns. Lessons are on flat work only, practicing communication skills, balance and body alignment, according to the center.

Riding instructors will coordinate lessons during camp and supplement with classroom sessions that cover topics that every rider should know. These classes are designed to build a rider’s self confidence while teaching horsemanship safety. The lessons concentrate on safety first, proper grooming, communication skills, body alignment, balance and an independent seat, which are the building blocks in becoming a good rider.

Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance, with a $50 non-refundable deposit and a release form. Each camp costs $300.

The camp lasts 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If arrangements are not made for earlier drop off or later pickup, the center charges $15 per half-hour before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. For an 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. care, the center changes an extra $100

Parents are required to provide their child with lunch, but the center will provide morning and afternoon snacks and drinks.

The center is located at 6201 Sample Road. Call 704-992-1550 for more information.
